Organise Your Home Together: Responsibilities and Agreements

A chore list says what needs doing, but can leave noticing, deciding and checking unassigned. This path starts with one small area and ends with an agreement you can review. The articles use fictional examples so you can adapt the approach to your own availability.

A path for what you need

  1. Agree who owns a whole area

Separate anticipating, deciding, doing and checking. The dinner example shows how to define an observable result and which decisions the area owner can make.

  2. Fit the agreement to the week ahead

Review shifts, visits and unexpected changes. The example keeps regular ownership separate from one-off cover, so a schedule change does not silently change the whole arrangement.

Before filling the whole sheet

Choose an area that leads to frequent reminders, such as meals or laundry. Write down the outcome that works for you both, who keeps the area running and what support they need. You do not need to schedule every minute or apply the same standard to every home.

Cover does not automatically change ownership

When someone covers one occasion, write down what they cover and for how long. If it keeps happening, review availability and the size of the area. The aim is clear coordination, not a ledger of favours.

Try it and review it together

Use the worksheet for a first agreement and choose a review date. Check whether the outcome is clear, decisions are understood and cover is workable. Adjust the agreement when experience shows what needs changing.
